The power plant project that Algeria is providing to Chad represents a fresh milestone in deepening ties between Algiers and N’Djamena.
On Monday in N’Djamena, Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb joined his Chadian counterpart, Head of Government Allamaye Halina, for the groundbreaking ceremony of this 40-megawatt solidarity power plant between the two nations.
Sonelgaz International appointed to build the power plant
This initiative signals further strengthening of Algeria-Chad relations and follows the directives of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. The ceremony began with a detailed technical presentation covering engineering aspects, implementation stages, and operational prospects, underscoring the facility’s role in boosting bilateral energy cooperation.
The project is overseen by the Ministry of Energy and Renewable Energies, which entrusted construction to Sonelgaz International, a subsidiary of the Sonelgaz Group. Equipped with gas turbines, the plant is designed to meet rising electricity demand and improve supply security for the capital N’Djamena and surrounding areas. Representing Algeria at the event on behalf of President Tebboune, Prime Minister Ghrieb highlighted the strategic importance of the project, calling it one of the first tangible outcomes of commitments made by the two countries’ leaders.
Toward a robust strategic partnership
In his address, Ghrieb stressed the special attention President Tebboune gives to strengthening cooperation and solidarity with fellow African nations, as well as his personal determination to support Chad’s development efforts, especially in vital sectors that improve citizens’ living conditions. He stated that this achievement “reflects the firm political will uniting the leaders of our two brotherly countries” and embodies the ambition to elevate Algeria-Chad relations “to the level of a solid strategic partnership based on effective solidarity, shared development, and mutual interests.”
“President Abdelmadjid Tebboune remains committed to reinforcing the bonds of fraternity between our two peoples and consolidating bilateral cooperation,” Ghrieb said, adding that this momentum contributes to the common goal of building “a more integrated and prosperous African space.” He noted that the project is among the first concrete results of the new dynamic set in motion by the Chadian president’s official visit to Algeria in April 2026. “The important discussions held with his brother, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, led to ambitious cooperation agreements and programs touching several strategic sectors,” he explained.
When cooperation supports regional stability
The prime minister also emphasized the African dimension of the initiative. “This project reflects Algeria’s deep conviction that effective African cooperation can generate shared development through concrete achievements directly benefiting citizens,” he asserted. According to him, “the Africa we believe in is one of active solidarity, concrete initiatives, productive investments, and wealth-creating partnerships for the benefit of African peoples.”
This vision fits into a broader approach to continental integration. In this regard, Ghrieb recalled that “Algeria and Chad pay special attention to major structural projects. The trans-Saharan highway, fiber-optic interconnection, and strengthening air transport and logistics will help open up our interior regions and create new opportunities for trade and investment.”
African solutions to African problems
Turning to regional matters, the prime minister reaffirmed the convergence of views between Algiers and N’Djamena. “We are determined to continue coordination and consultation on various regional and continental issues,” he assured. He added, “This approach reflects our common belief in the unity of destiny of our peoples and the need to promote African solutions to African problems, respecting state sovereignty.”
Ghrieb therefore renewed Algeria’s commitment to accompany Chad in its development efforts. “On behalf of President of the Republic Abdelmadjid Tebboune, I reaffirm Algeria’s constant commitment to supporting the Republic of Chad and strengthening the bilateral partnership for the development, stability, and prosperity of our two countries,” he declared.
