Algeria continues to demonstrate its commitment to African solidarity by supporting nations in need of sustainable development. Following the inauguration of a 40MW solidarity power plant in Gorou Banda, Niger, Algerian officials traveled to N’Djamena to preside over a landmark ceremony for an identical project in Chad.

Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb, accompanied by Chadian Prime Minister Allamaye Halina, laid the foundation stone for the Algerian-Chadian Solidarity Electric Power Plant, a 40MW facility designed to bolster Chad’s energy infrastructure. This initiative mirrors Algeria’s recent contribution to Niger, reflecting a broader strategy to foster economic growth and energy independence across the Sahel-Sahara region.

From historical solidarity to modern development partnerships

Algeria’s support extends beyond symbolic gestures. The nation has allocated one billion dollars to its Agency for International Cooperation in Solidarity and Development (AICA), funding projects across Africa aimed at reducing dependency and promoting self-sufficiency. This approach is particularly vital for the Sahel-Saharan region, where Algeria’s leadership sees natural synergy in regional integration and shared progress.

During the ceremony in N’Djamena, Prime Minister Ghrieb reaffirmed Algeria’s dedication to Chad’s development, emphasizing knowledge transfer, capacity-building, and collaboration in energy, mining, industry, and infrastructure sectors. He highlighted the plant’s deep significance, stating it would enhance Chad’s energy resilience while supporting broader social and economic goals.

The project embodies the unshakable political will of both nations to deepen strategic partnerships rooted in solidarity, mutual benefit, and collective advancement. Ghrieb conveyed President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s greetings to Chadian authorities and citizens, stressing Algeria’s enduring commitment to fostering brotherhood and strengthening bilateral ties.

In April 2026, Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno paid an official visit to Algeria, where high-level discussions led to ambitious cooperation agreements spanning critical sectors. The timing of Ghrieb’s visit to N’Djamena reflects the rapid implementation of these commitments, with the new power plant serving as tangible proof of the evolving relationship.

Under President Tebboune’s directives, this initiative marks a new chapter in Algerian-Chadian relations, laying the groundwork for a more integrated and prosperous African continent.
