Babily Dembélé: a journey of resilience in Côte d’Ivoire

Born into humble beginnings and early exposed to life’s harsh realities, Babily Dembélé has emerged as a multifaceted leader in Côte d’Ivoire. As an architect, politician, entrepreneur, and social activist, his journey is a testament to perseverance, faith, and an unwavering drive to excel.

From humble roots to academic excellence

Hailing from a modest family, Babily Dembélé grew up in extreme poverty, first in an animist tradition, then converting to Catholicism and later Islam. His father, a farmer displaced from Kouto to Dimbokro under forced labor, eventually settled in Brofodoumé thanks to the hospitality of the Béché family. Despite financial hardships, his parents instilled in him the values of hard work, dignity, and determination.

His early years were marked by hardship. Sent to live with a relative in Sassandra, he endured grueling conditions, sometimes sleeping in a chicken coop. These trials forged his resilience and fueled his ambition. A turning point came when he met a French priest named Alib, who recognized his potential and provided him with moral support and educational guidance. With dedication and outstanding academic performance, Babily Dembélé quickly became one of the top students of his generation.

Standing out in a generation of achievers

During his schooling, he was classmates with notable figures such as Maître Boga Doudou, future lawyer, and Adama Koné, a relative of Ambassador Aboubacar Koné. All three earned their baccalaureate in the same year, each pursuing different paths: Boga Doudou in law, while Babily Dembélé chose the sciences. His brilliance in mathematics earned him the national laureate title in 1977-1978, catching the attention of President Félix Houphouët-Boigny, who invited him and his mother to the Palace. Impressed, the president personally supported his academic journey.

With this backing, Babily Dembélé joined the Paris Academy of Sciences, where he pursued advanced studies and earned a degree as an expert architect. Driven by a thirst for knowledge, he later enrolled at Al-Azhar University in Egypt, obtaining a diploma in the anthropology of African and Western cultures. This dual scientific and cultural background profoundly shaped his vision for development and intercultural dialogue.

Building a legacy: from politics to social impact

Returning to Côte d’Ivoire in the mid-1980s, he was recommended by President Houphouët-Boigny to the African Development Bank. This marked the beginning of a distinguished international career, during which he contributed to infrastructure projects in 53 African countries, including buildings, roads, and bridges.

In 1995, President Henri Konan Bédié appointed him as a special advisor for religious affairs, political parties, and civil society, honing his political and diplomatic expertise. However, the political turmoil that followed, including the 1999 coup and the 2002 military-crisis, led to his arrest and exile in France for five years. Despite these challenges, his commitment to Côte d’Ivoire never wavered.

In 2007, at the request of President Laurent Gbagbo, he returned to serve as the special representative to Arab countries. Alongside his political roles, Babily Dembélé ventured into private enterprise, acquiring CIAD-Primo and launching a large-scale residential project in M’Pouto, Riviera commune, featuring 800 homes across 40 hectares with an estimated investment of 5 to 7 billion FCFA.

A champion of social cohesion

His dedication to fostering unity extended to religious initiatives. He played a key role in constructing several places of worship, including 11 mosques and 7 churches. Notably, in 1999, he facilitated the pilgrimage of 2,000 Ivoirians to Mecca and Medina by chartering a Saudi plane, significantly reducing travel costs for pilgrims.
