Belgium to permanently close its embassy in Mali by June 2026

Belgium will terminate its permanent diplomatic presence in Mali by June 30, 2026. In an update shared on June 5, the Belgian embassy in Bamako confirmed that its services and operations will gradually transition to Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, reflecting a broader shift in European diplomatic strategy across the Sahel region.

Belgium's embassy in Bamako

Belgium has confirmed the permanent closure of its embassy in Mali, effective June 30, 2026, ending decades of continuous diplomatic representation in Bamako. The official announcement, released on June 5, outlines the phased transfer of diplomatic and consular activities to Ouagadougou. According to the statement, « Following the planned closure on June 30, 2026, the responsibilities and services of our embassy in Bamako will be assumed by the Belgian Embassy in Ouagadougou starting June 1, 2026. »

This transition means Ouagadougou will now serve as the primary point of contact for all matters related to Mali, including political engagement, consular services, and bilateral relations. The decision reflects Belgium’s broader strategic review of its global diplomatic network, with plans to streamline operations by reducing its overseas missions and reallocating resources to higher-priority regions.

Security concerns have played a significant role in this move. In late April, Belgian authorities issued urgent advisories, urging nationals in Mali to leave the country promptly due to escalating security threats in Bamako. The closure further diminishes the number of European embassies maintaining a permanent presence in Mali, as several international partners have already adjusted their diplomatic footprint in the Sahel over recent years.
