Bénin and Niger remove barriers to strengthen bilateral ties

Cotonou and Niamey have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening collaboration across multiple sectors during a landmark official visit by Beninese President Romuald Wadagni to Niger. The trip, extended at the invitation of Niger’s Head of State, Abdourahamane Tiani, concluded with a joint communiqué outlining concrete steps to revitalize bilateral relations.

In the document, both leaders underscored the urgency of reinforcing political, economic, scientific, and cultural cooperation. A key priority is the resumption of regular meetings between the Niger-Benin Joint Cooperation Commission, designed to foster sustained dialogue and joint initiatives. The Presidents also pledged to eliminate all obstacles hindering bilateral progress, with a particular emphasis on reopening the long-closed Benin-Niger border—a move expected to revitalize cross-border trade and human mobility.

To translate these commitments into action, the two nations will establish an expert committee tasked with identifying barriers to cooperation and proposing viable solutions. The team has been given a 15-day deadline to deliver a comprehensive report, ensuring swift and measurable progress.

The discussions between Wadagni and Tiani, which included extended deliberations with their respective delegations, were described as “exceptionally cordial,” providing a platform to address shared challenges at both regional and global levels. The leaders celebrated the enduring bonds of friendship and cooperation uniting their nations, vowing to elevate bilateral ties to meet the aspirations of their populations, who seek stability, security, and sustainable development.

President Wadagni, sworn in just weeks prior on May 24, has made reconciliation with neighboring states a cornerstone of his administration. In a gesture of reciprocity, he extended an official invitation to President Tiani to visit Cotonou, signaling a new chapter in Niger-Benin relations.
