Chad’s bishops urge inclusive dialogue to break political deadlock
The Catholic bishops of Chad have issued a strong call for immediate dialogue to address the country’s escalating political crisis. In a statement released on May 6, the prelates expressed deep concern over the deteriorating situation and emphasized that trust-building and reconciliation must take priority. “Sincere and inclusive dialogue remains the only viable path forward“, they affirmed.
Rising intercommunal violence triggers urgent intervention

The bishops’ appeal follows a spate of deadly intercommunal clashes across Chad, particularly in Dar Tama (Wadi Fira) and Guera. The most recent incident occurred on May 5, when an attack on a military base in Barka Toulorom (Lake Chad) claimed at least 23 lives, according to an official government statement. Just days earlier, on April 26, intercommunal violence in eastern Chad resulted in 42 fatalities. The bishops condemned these acts of violence in the strongest terms, reaffirming that “human life is sacred and no one has the right to take it”.
They underscored that “violence cannot resolve disagreements—it only deepens divisions and perpetuates suffering”. The prelates also highlighted the humanitarian toll of the crisis, expressing solidarity with grieving families and injured victims.
Concerns over political repression and democratic backsliding
The bishops voiced alarm over the recent surge in arrests of opposition figures and critics, warning that such measures undermine democratic principles, freedom of expression, and human rights. “These actions weaken social cohesion and threaten the nation’s unity“, they noted. The prelates stressed that pluralism—cultural, political, and religious—is not a weakness but a foundation for a strong, lawful state.
“Exclusion, injustice, and violence can only be overcome through dialogue, justice, and mutual respect“, they wrote. “Diversity should be seen as a strength, not an obstacle, in building a unified nation.”
A roadmap for peace: dialogue, truth, and reconciliation
The bishops reaffirmed their commitment to constructive, inclusive dialogue as the sole means to end Chad’s political impasse. “All stakeholders must engage in meaningful discussions grounded in truth, mutual respect, and peaceful solutions“, they urged. Such dialogue, they argued, is essential for lasting reconciliation and stability.
The prelates called on authorities to exercise wisdom and restraint, fostering an environment of trust conducive to reconciliation. “Peace is a precious gift that we must all work together to preserve“, they concluded. Their thoughts and prayers extend to the victims’ families, the wounded, and all those affected by the crisis.
