Dakar court case: ousmane sonko and mame mbaye niang property dispute postponed to 2026

The high court in Dakar has announced a significant adjournment in the ongoing legal confrontation between Mame Mbaye Niang and former Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko. The case, which involves a contentious property dispute, will now resume on July 22, 2026. This extensive postponement was granted at the request of Sonko’s legal team, allowing them ample time to prepare their responses to the latest legal submissions.

At the heart of this legal battle, Mame Mbaye Niang initiated proceedings against the former Premier, seeking the annulment of what he alleges to be a fraudulent transfer of real estate. Niang aims to have the villa, currently associated with Ousmane Sonko and located in the prestigious Cité Keur Gorgui, re-registered under his name. This move is intended to facilitate the recovery of 200 million CFA francs in damages, a sum previously awarded to him by the Senegalese judiciary.

Previously, Ousmane Sonko received a definitive sentence of two months in prison and was ordered to pay the 200 million CFA francs in damages to Mame Mbaye Niang. Following this judgment, Niang attempted to execute the court’s decision. However, he encountered a substantial impediment: the leasehold for the villa, specifically lot n°R/17, a 264m2 plot within Cité Keur Gorgui, was reportedly transferred into the name of the family of the Pastef party leader.

According to Mame Mbaye Niang and his legal counsel, this property transfer represents a deliberate strategy to orchestrate Ousmane Sonko’s insolvency and shield the asset from seizure. They strongly suspect that the former minister intentionally divested himself of the property to evade the enforcement of the substantial financial penalty imposed by the court.

The case had seen an earlier hearing before being adjourned to June 10. That prior postponement was specifically granted to allow Mame Mbaye Niang’s lawyers to meticulously prepare their counter-arguments to the documents filed by Ousmane Sonko’s defense team.
