Dangerous swell warning issued for Senegal’s coastline

dangerous swell warning issued for Senegal’s coastline

The National Agency for Civil Aviation and Meteorology (ANACIM) has issued a critical warning about dangerous swell conditions and strong winds affecting Senegal’s coastal regions. Mariners and coastal communities are urged to exercise extreme caution and adhere strictly to safety guidelines until may 16.

Coastal warning for dangerous swell conditions in Senegal

ANACIM has raised the alarm regarding hazardous swell conditions and gale-force winds expected to impact parts of Senegal’s coastline in the coming days.

The meteorological agency forecasts a northern swell exceeding 2.5 meters along the Grande Côte starting tuesday, may 12 at 3:00 a.m., with the conditions reaching Dakar by wednesday, may 13 at 1:00 a.m. These challenging sea conditions are projected to persist until saturday, may 16 at 1:00 a.m.

meteorological conditions along the coastline

In addition to the swell, strong northerly winds are expected to batter the Grande Côte from monday, may 11 at 11:00 p.m. to wednesday, may 13 at 7:00 a.m., with gusts potentially reaching 40 km/h.

The combination of rough seas, powerful winds, and elevated waves poses significant risks to maritime activities, including navigation and fishing. Small boats are particularly vulnerable to these hazardous conditions.

safety recommendations for coastal communities

ANACIM strongly advises fishermen, mariners, and residents of coastal areas to remain vigilant and comply with all safety protocols issued by local authorities. The agency emphasizes the importance of avoiding unnecessary sea travel and ensuring that all maritime equipment is securely fastened.

Staying informed through official weather updates and adhering to local advisories can help minimize risks associated with these severe weather conditions.
