Diplomatic mission reinforces dr Congo-Uganda security ties

On Monday, the Ugandan Head of State welcomed Floribert Anzuluni Isiloketshi, the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Minister of Regional Integration and special envoy of President Félix Tshisekedi, at his private residence in Kisozi. The high-level meeting centered on the escalating security crisis in eastern DRC and the urgent need for regional collaboration to restore stability across the Great Lakes.

The envoy’s visit follows a series of diplomatic consultations between Kinshasa and Kampala, aimed at addressing persistent security threats along their shared border. In a statement released on social media, the Ugandan leader emphasized the shared commitment to peace and prosperity in the region, highlighting the critical role of cross-border cooperation in tackling the ongoing instability in eastern DRC.

Ugandan and Congolese officials in a high-level meeting

Floribert Anzuluni expressed gratitude for the warm reception and reaffirmed the Congolese government’s dedication to resolving the crisis. « The discussions with President Museveni underscore the importance of regional solidarity in restoring peace to eastern DRC, » he noted. The visit comes at a time when provinces such as North Kivu, South Kivu, and Ituri remain under severe strain due to relentless attacks by armed groups, including the M23 coalition and the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF).

As Kinshasa’s special envoy, Anzuluni’s mission is to strengthen diplomatic ties and rally regional support for sustainable peace initiatives in eastern DRC. The deteriorating security situation has displaced thousands, complicating government efforts to stabilize the area and hinder rebel group activities.

Security cooperation between the two nations has intensified since late 2021, with the DR Congo Armed Forces (FARDC) and the Ugandan People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) launching the « Shujaa » joint operation. This military campaign targets ADF fighters, who have been responsible for widespread civilian attacks. The partnership has been renewed multiple times, reinforcing its role as a cornerstone of efforts to dismantle armed factions.

Beyond security, the two countries are also advancing economic integration through cross-border infrastructure projects. Improved road networks are designed to boost trade and foster regional economic resilience, aligning with broader goals of regional stability and development.

By reaffirming their commitment to collaboration, both governments signal a unified stance against the persistent threats undermining peace in eastern DRC and the wider Great Lakes region.
