Football legend El-Hadji Diouf has been handed a suspended one-year prison sentence by a Dakar court for failing to meet his child support obligations. The ruling, delivered this past Tuesday, marks the latest legal chapter in a prolonged dispute between the Ballon d’Or winner and his former spouse.
court imposes penalties for unpaid alimony
The Dakar magistrate’s decision follows a series of court-ordered payments Diouf was required to make following his 2023 divorce from Valérie Émilie Joséphine Leres Bishop. During the divorce proceedings, Diouf was granted visitation rights but was ordered to pay a monthly allowance of 500,000 West African CFA francs for their daughter’s upbringing.
Prosecutors argued that Diouf had accumulated significant arrears, with the unpaid child support totaling 9 million CFA francs for the period between March 2024 and September 2025. In addition, the court ruled that Diouf must compensate his ex-wife with an additional 10 million CFA francs in damages—a figure that includes 559,200 CFA francs for meal expenses incurred during the same timeframe.
former footballer’s legal and sporting legacy
Diouf, a two-time African Footballer of the Year (2001, 2002), remains one of Senegal’s most celebrated athletes. His international career with the Lions of Teranga included 60 appearances and 18 goals, cementing his status as a national icon. Despite his on-field achievements, his legal troubles have drawn attention to ongoing debates about financial responsibility in high-profile divorces.
While the suspended sentence avoids immediate incarceration, the ruling underscores the seriousness with which Senegal’s courts treat non-compliance with family financial obligations.
