Escalating violence grips north kivu, eastern democratic republic of Congo

The security situation continues to deteriorate rapidly across the Rutshuru territory in North Kivu. Over a two-day period, between Tuesday and Wednesday, June 24, at least ten individuals were abducted, two others tragically lost their lives, and numerous properties were plundered.

These disturbing incidents, documented across at least six distinct localities, encompass a range of violent acts including kidnappings, armed highway robberies, forceful incursions into homes, and direct confrontations between various armed groups. Humanitarian organizations are now urgently appealing for the swift re-establishment of security throughout this volatile region of the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

On Wednesday morning, specifically between 9 and 10 o’clock, a wave of abductions saw at least seven people seized along the Kibirizi-Rwindi axis near Butindiri, and also on the Kibirizi-Kibingu route. Among those targeted were three moto-taxi drivers and their passengers. The perpetrators also looted a significant haul of at least 18 packages of fish, which had been transported from Vitshumbi. The identities of these assailants remain undisclosed.

The previous day, Tuesday, three additional individuals fell victim to kidnapping. Two were forcibly taken during an armed raid on a residence in the Buzito neighborhood of Kiwanja, while the third was captured in the Majengo area of Kibirizi.

Also on Tuesday, a cargo truck belonging to local traders came under attack on the Kanyabayonga-Rwindi road. Armed individuals opened fire, forcing the driver to stop the vehicle before they proceeded to seize its entire contents. Fortunately, no casualties were reported in this particular assault.

Tragically, on that same Tuesday, a 22-year-old woman and her child were killed in the village of Kiseguro. They were fatally struck by stray bullets during fierce clashes between AFC-M23 rebels and FDLR combatants.

In a separate but equally distressing development, the Democratic Republic of Congo Red Cross reported the deaths of two of its dedicated volunteers. They were killed on June 16 in the Walungu territory of South Kivu. The victims were on a critical mission overseeing potable water supply projects in the village of Kakumba when they were ambushed.

Edgard Mateso, the national president of the Red Cross in the Democratic Republic of Congo, issued a strong condemnation of this attack, labeling it a severe breach of international humanitarian principles. He underscored how this tragic incident starkly illustrates the persistent dangers faced by humanitarian aid workers operating across the eastern regions of the country, a recurring theme in Africa news.
