FIFA referee Omar Artan barred from entering the united states

FIFA referee Omar Artan denied entry to the United States ahead of World Cup

The countdown to the 2026 FIFA World Cup has been marred by an unexpected diplomatic hurdle involving one of Africa’s top football officials. Omar Artan, a Somalian referee accredited by FIFA to officiate at the tournament, was barred from entering the United States—one of the host nations—despite holding valid accreditation.

The U.S. customs authorities rejected Artan’s entry request without delay, overriding his official FIFA designation. This decision underscores the stringent immigration policies applied to travelers from the Horn of Africa, even when diplomatic channels have been engaged.

Diplomatic passport fails to secure entry

Artan’s journey to obtain entry clearance was far from straightforward. Initially facing visa challenges, the Somalian Embassy in Nairobi expedited his travel by issuing a diplomatic passport. Yet, the U.S. immigration services maintained their firm stance, refusing to grant admission despite the official credentials presented by the Somali state.

To date, no formal explanation has been provided by either the Somalian Football Federation or U.S. consular authorities regarding the refusal.

Setback for Africa’s 2025 Referee of the Year

This administrative exclusion deals a significant blow to Omar Artan, widely regarded as one of the continent’s most respected referees. His stellar performance in the recent CAF Champions League final—where he officiated the second leg between Pyramids FC and Mamelodi Sundowns—earned him the prestigious title of African Referee of the Year 2025 from the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

The incident raises pressing questions about the freedom of movement for athletes and officials during global sporting events hosted in the United States, especially as the World Cup prepares to welcome teams from across the globe.
