French national held in Dakar amid tightening of anti-lgbt legislation

Legal proceedings against a French engineer in Senegal

A French national residing in Sénégal has been apprehended during a series of police operations in Dakar. The individual, identified as an engineer in his thirties, is currently facing several grave charges. These include “unnatural acts,” criminal association, money laundering, and the attempted transmission of HIV.

Diplomatic monitoring and consular support

The French embassy in Dakar is closely overseeing the development of this judicial case. Representatives from the consulate have already performed four visits to the detainee to provide consular protection and verify his conditions of detention. Authorities in Paris remain in regular contact with the man’s family and the Quai d’Orsay to ensure a coordinated response to the situation.

Stiffening of penalties for homosexual relations

This detention follows the recent adoption of a rigorous new law in Sénégal at the beginning of March. Under this updated legislation, individuals convicted of homosexual acts can face up to ten years of imprisonment. This legal reform has emerged during a period of heightened social and political tension surrounding LGBT+ rights in the country. France maintains its official stance in favor of the universal decriminalization of homosexuality and continues to advocate for the end of discrimination against sexual minorities globally.
