Gabon and european union open strategic dialogue on governance and resources

Gabon and the European Union launched a new phase of their political partnership on Monday, June 8, 2026, at the Palais des Congrès in Libreville’s Cité de la Démocratie. Ahead of this meeting, Vice President of the Government Hermann Immongault chaired a preparatory session on June 4 to align government positions on key issues to be discussed with EU ambassadors accredited to Gabon. This dialogue takes place as Gabon enters its Fifth Republic, following an earlier session held in 2024 during the Transition.

Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Minister Marie Edith Tassyla Doumbeneny stated that discussions will focus on governance, democracy, sustainable forest resource management, regional and multilateral cooperation, and economic prospects. She noted that the dialogue will also assess overall relations between Gabon and the EU, both institutionally and through bilateral partnerships with member states.

Four priority areas to strengthen the partnership

The joint communiqué specifies that this second session of the Gabon-EU Political Dialogue is part of implementing the Samoa Agreement and revolves around four major themes: political reforms, governance and the rule of law; economic prospects, investment and the business environment; sustainable natural resource management and energy transition; and multilateral cooperation, peace and regional security. Both sides aim to evaluate progress, identify common challenges, and open new cooperation avenues in strategic sectors.

Hermann Immongault described the meeting as a true exercise of sovereignty and economic diplomacy. The vice president emphasized the need to coherently defend national priorities in what he called a promising partnership. Based on dialogue, trust and mutual respect, the session is expected to conclude with the adoption of a joint communiqué outlining key cooperation directions between Gabon and the European Union for the coming years.
