Gabon rejects US migrant expulsion deal under Oligui Nguema’s leadership

The Gabonese government has firmly rejected a bilateral agreement with the United States aimed at managing and receiving migrants expelled from American territory. This move underscores Libreville’s independent diplomatic stance, prioritizing national interests over external pressures.

In a candid statement, President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema clarified Gabon’s position during an interview, emphasizing the distinction between personal rapport and strategic national decisions. « While I hold President Trump in high regard, Gabon will not endorse this agreement as it conflicts with our sovereign priorities, » he declared, leaving no room for ambiguity.

This refusal deals a significant blow to Washington’s strategy of outsourcing the reception and transit of deported individuals to third countries. Gabon’s decision highlights its refusal to compromise its administrative and security capacities for external agendas.

The cornerstone of national sovereignty

By rejecting this proposal, the Gabonese administration safeguards its resources, already stretched thin by domestic challenges and the demands of the Fifth Republic. Libreville’s focus remains on domestic stability, economic revitalization, and preparing for upcoming elections. The message to Western partners is unequivocal: cooperation will never come at the expense of Gabon’s sovereignty or social cohesion.
