Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, President of Gabon, has officially announced his upcoming state visit to France, scheduled for July 20, 2026. The announcement was made during a press briefing, though further details about the agenda remain undisclosed at this stage.
Strengthening bilateral ties: a renewed partnership
This visit marks a continuation of the direct dialogue established between Libreville and Paris following the conclusion of Gabon’s political transition. The two heads of state are expected to prioritize key areas of cooperation, including economic collaboration, environmental initiatives, and forest conservation in the Congo Basin. Discussions will also focus on security challenges and human capital development, particularly through training programs.
A historic diplomatic momentum
Since assuming office in August 2023, President Oligui Nguema has made one prior official trip to France. From May 27 to 31, 2024, he engaged in high-level meetings, culminating in an audience with French President Emmanuel Macron at the Élysée Palace. That visit laid the groundwork for renewed cooperation across economic, political, trade, and environmental sectors, with a strong emphasis on biodiversity protection and climate action.
The 2024 visit also featured a Franco-Gabonese economic forum in Paris, drawing nearly 600 business leaders. Additionally, the President met with the Gabonese diaspora, reinforcing cultural and economic ties. The upcoming July 2026 visit will be his second official trip to France since taking office.
Reciprocal engagements: Macron’s visit to Gabon in late 2025
In return, French President Emmanuel Macron made two official trips to Gabon since 2017, including a landmark visit in November 2025. During that stay, he was received at Léon-Mba International Airport by President Oligui Nguema. The visit underscored France’s commitment to supporting Gabon’s transition toward a renewed political framework based on equal partnership.
Key outcomes of the November 2025 meeting included agreements on military training initiatives, the establishment of a natural resource protection academy, and support for upgrades to the Transgabonais railway.
Building a balanced future together
The upcoming visit by President Oligui Nguema signals Gabon’s intent to foster a strong, balanced partnership with France. Following the successful encounters in Paris (May 2024) and Libreville (November 2025), the diplomatic calendar between the two nations is accelerating, reflecting a shared vision for sustainable development and mutual growth.
