The Al-Qaeda-affiliated armed group, Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), has released a propaganda video showcasing its April 25 assault on the military camp and airport in Sévaré, a key location near Mopti in central Mali.
This attack on Sévaré was one in a series of coordinated offensives against several Malian towns, executed by JNIM jihadists alongside Tuareg separatists from the Front de libération de l’Azawad (FLA).
This propaganda footage offers insight into JNIM’s evolving strategic capabilities, as observed by analyst Bakary Sambe, director of the Timbuktu Institute.
“JNIM has demonstrated its capability to infiltrate urban environments and highly strategic areas like the Sévaré airport and military camp,” Mr. Sambe emphasized. “This development raises concerns for both the Malian army and its Russian allies.”
The coordinated attacks carried out in April notably led to separatists regaining control of Kidal and tragically resulted in the assassination of Malian Defense Minister Sadio Camara in Kati, near Bamako.
These assaults also left 16 individuals wounded, according to official reports from the Malian government.
“What JNIM has successfully achieved is to gradually push Mali into a state that is neither fully peace nor full-scale war,” explained Bakary Sambe. “Within this ambiguity, they are deploying an increasingly offensive strategy.” He also highlighted the emergence of figures such as Bina Diarra, one of JNIM’s spokespersons, as part of efforts to establish the group “as a legitimate political actor.”
The release of this propaganda video coincides with Malian authorities announcing rewards for information leading to the location or capture of JNIM leaders, underscoring the ongoing counter-terrorism strategy against the group.
