Laurent Gbagbo re-elected head of PPA-CI in Côte d’Ivoire
Delegates at the PPA-CI’s ordinary congress in Abidjan overwhelmingly reaffirmed their support for Laurent Gbagbo, who continues his leadership of the party he founded after returning from the ICC.
Historic re-election at Abidjan congress
Nearly 3,000 delegates gathered at the Treichville Cultural Palace in Abidjan for the PPA-CI’s first ordinary congress since its founding in 2020. The party, established after Laurent Gbagbo’s return from the International Criminal Court (ICC), where he was acquitted of post-election violence charges in 2010-2011, overwhelmingly re-elected him as leader.
Despite earlier indications in 2025 that he would step back from active party leadership while remaining politically engaged, Gbagbo yielded to the strong urging of his supporters and accepted another term at the helm of the PPA-CI.
Party renewal and generational transition
The congress marked a strategic moment for the party, focusing on internal restructuring and revitalizing grassroots organizations. Party leaders emphasized that Gbagbo’s new mandate would serve as a bridge to a gradual handover to a younger generation of activists.
With his decades of political experience and grassroots connection, Gbagbo’s presence continues to shape the party’s direction as it prepares for future electoral challenges in Côte d’Ivoire.
What’s next for PPA-CI?
The party’s renewed leadership faces the dual challenge of maintaining political relevance while fostering new talent. Observers will closely watch how Gbagbo’s continued influence impacts the party’s ability to mobilize supporters ahead of upcoming elections and internal reforms.
