The recent road blockades around Bamako, Mali, have left travelers stranded and disrupted transportation networks. Following attacks on April 25 that targeted multiple regions, the Group for Support of Islam and Muslims (Jnim) imposed these restrictions, severely impacting movement to and from the capital.
escalating violence halts transport services
Dozens of commercial and cargo vehicles heading toward Bamako were set ablaze last week by jihadist militants. While some transport companies persist in operating across Mali, many have suspended services entirely due to safety concerns.
extended travel times and canceled routes
A journey that typically takes four days from Nouakchott to Bamako has become unpredictable. Mody, a Malian migrant traveling for the Eid al-Adha celebrations, shared his harrowing experience:
« We left Nouakchott last Thursday at 7 AM and reached Gogui at the border by 11 PM. The drivers warned us the route was dangerous, so we spent Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights there. Sunday morning, we were told a Malian military convoy would escort us. After waiting hours, we departed without the convoy and reached Diéma. There, we learned earlier buses had all turned back due to orders from Jnim jihadists. »
A transport company representative confirmed that ten buses remain stranded in neighboring countries, with two set on fire over the weekend on national roads.
passengers stranded for days
In another sector, passengers bound for Ségou, a central Malian city, have waited nearly a week for available tickets. Seyba, a 60-year-old traveler, explained:
« I came to offer condolences to my family after a relative’s passing. Now, I’m stuck in Bamako because no buses are operating to Ségou. I checked four companies—same situation everywhere. If I can’t find transport, I’ll stay with relatives here until it’s safe to travel. »
The company’s manager, speaking off-record, revealed that five buses were lost to arson last Saturday. The company has since halted all services to and from Bamako until further notice.
ongoing travel uncertainties
The blockades have left travelers scrambling for alternatives, with no clear timeline for when routes will reopen. For now, passengers face prolonged waits or costly detours, highlighting the far-reaching impact of the Jnim-imposed restrictions on daily life in Mali.
