Morocco reaffirmed its commitment to a political solution for the Libya crisis during the African Union Peace and Security Council meeting on Tuesday, June 9, 2026.

Ambassador Mohamed Arrouchi, Morocco’s permanent representative to the AU and UN Economic Commission for Africa, reiterated the kingdom’s support for national reconciliation and dialogue among Libyan factions.

Arrouchi emphasised that the Skhirat Agreement, signed on December 17, 2015 under UN auspices, remains a key reference framework for a lasting resolution. He also stressed the importance of preserving Libya’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.

He expressed Morocco’s appreciation for the AU’s peace and security efforts across the continent, particularly those aimed at a political solution to the Libyan crisis.

The ambassador recalled meetings held in Tripoli and Zenten, which led to a January 7, 2026 agreement in the Libyan capital between representatives of the Government of National Unity and the eastern Libyan government.

Arrouchi highlighted Morocco’s role in facilitating the political process by bridging differences between Libyan parties.

These efforts, he said, are grounded in international legality, the Skhirat Agreement’s conclusions, and the Bouznika understandings. Morocco reiterated the need to pursue political settlement without resorting to military options.
