Niamey, 8 June 2026 – The Nigerien Electricity Company (NIGELEC) announced on Monday that power cuts affecting Dosso, Niamey and Tillabéri stem from a technical failure on the Zone Fleuve electrical system. NIGELEC teams detected the fault at around 1:50 a.m. and were immediately mobilised to restore supply gradually.
While waiting for full recovery, the company has activated local generation units to lessen the impact on customers. NIGELEC apologised for the disruption and assured that repair work continues.

Cautious crisis communication
In a bid to reassure startled customers, NIGELEC’s management has been measured. While the company confirms the anomaly centred on the critical Zone Fleuve grid, it has not yet revealed the exact nature or technical origin of this major failure. Behind the scenes, engineers are racing to diagnose the problem. Understanding the disruption to daily life and the economy, NIGELEC asks for patience while teams secure and fully restore the main system.
Strategic geographical axis paralysed
The incident’s impact is far from trivial, striking the country’s economic and administrative core—the capital Niamey along with the key regions of Dosso and Tillabéri. To avoid a complete blackout and keep essential infrastructure (hospitals, businesses, government offices) operational, NIGELEC urgently switched on its local production units. This shift to backup generators, though insufficient to cover normal demand, serves as a temporary buffer to mitigate severe inconveniences until reconnection to the national grid.
