The diplomatic ties between Niger and Türkiye reached a new milestone during a landmark visit by Niger’s head of state, General Abdourahamane Tiani, to Ankara on Thursday. This visit, marking the first official trip by the Nigerien leader outside Africa since assuming office, culminated in the signing of multiple cooperation agreements spanning security, economic development, healthcare, education, and diplomatic relations.
Strategic pacts signed following high-level talks
Following intensive discussions at the presidential palace, Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Abdourahamane Tiani formalized several key documents, including a higher education protocol for 2026-2030, the establishment of a Joint Economic and Trade Commission (JETCO), an agreement on the management of the Niger-Türkiye Friendship Hospital, and a memorandum of diplomatic cooperation.
Expanding collaboration across critical sectors
The Turkish president emphasized the shared ambition to strengthen cooperation in vital areas such as defense, energy, mining, agriculture, trade, and investment. He also announced the creation of a dedicated mechanism designed to unlock new business prospects between the two capitals, Ankara and Niamey.
Erdogan reiterated Türkiye’s steadfast support for African nations facing security challenges, particularly in the Sahel region. He highlighted plans to enhance military training programs and intelligence-sharing initiatives, while underscoring Ankara’s African policy pillars: mutual respect, equitable partnership, and reciprocal benefits.
Highlighting tangible achievements in Niger
During the visit, the Turkish leader spotlighted several successful initiatives in Niger, including the operational Niger-Türkiye Friendship Hospital, ongoing irrigation and rural development projects, and the educational outreach of the Maarif Foundation. He noted that nearly 500 Nigerien students are currently pursuing higher education in Türkiye.
Nigerien leadership praises burgeoning partnership
In response, General Tiani described the relationship as a cornerstone of Niger’s foreign policy. He reflected on the rapid expansion of bilateral ties since Erdogan’s historic visit to Niger in 2013, and acknowledged Ankara’s critical role in bolstering the country’s fight against armed groups in the Sahel. Tiani credited this collaboration with playing a pivotal role in enhancing Niger’s security resilience and stability.
