Olympique Lyonnais pushes for Ligue 1 opener delay amid Champions League ambitions
The Olympique Lyonnais (OL) is pulling out all the stops to secure a path to the UEFA Champions League. In a strategic move, the club has formally requested the postponement of its inaugural Ligue 1 fixture.
Strategic timing to protect European dreams
The Rhone-based side has submitted an official request to the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) to postpone the away game at Toulouse, scheduled for August 22, but only if qualification for the Champions League playoffs is confirmed. The timing of the match would otherwise fall between the two legs of a potential European playoff, a critical juncture for the club’s continental ambitions.
Preparing for European battles
Lyon resumed training on June 29 to gear up for the Champions League third qualifying round, set for early August. Should they advance, the team under Paulo Fonseca’s guidance would face the playoff rounds shortly after. The club’s leadership argues that the delay would allow them to focus entirely on their European campaign without the distraction of domestic league commitments.
The OL framed its request under the greater interest of French football, a rationale previously invoked by Paris Saint-Germain in a similar situation last season. The LFP is expected to rule on this request in the coming days, a decision that could shape the club’s approach to a potential double-header against European opposition.
