The Ivorian political landscape faces heightened internal tensions as the Parti des Peuples Africains – Côte d’Ivoire (PPA-CI) prepares for its first ordinary congress on May 14-15, 2026, in Abidjan. In an official statement released on May 13, 2026, the party’s leadership—led by Laurent Gbagbo—announced disciplinary actions against 61 members and activists deemed ‘undisciplined.’

The sanctions, outlined in a communiqué signed by the party’s Secretary-General, Tchéidé Jean Gervais, stem from a decision by the Strategic and Political Council (CSP) numbered 02-2026/CSP/PPA-CI/KKJ/07052026, endorsed by the party presidency on May 13, 2026. The move aims to uphold internal discipline and ensure smooth preparations for the upcoming congress, according to party officials.

The sanctions fall into three distinct categories:

  • Group 1: 44 cadres suspended for 18 months, barred from party activities and internal elections during this period.
  • Group 2: 10 cadres suspended for 12 months, with similar restrictions.
  • Group 3: 7 cadres suspended for 6 months, facing identical penalties.

This decisive action occurs amid a politically charged environment, as the PPA-CI gears up for a pivotal organizational milestone. Political observers interpret the sweeping sanctions as an attempt by the leadership to assert authority and consolidate support around the party’s official line.

While the move underscores the party’s commitment to discipline, it has sparked internal debates. Some analysts view the suspensions as evidence of escalating tensions, fueled by strategic divergences and leadership disputes in the lead-up to the congress. As of now, no public statements have emerged from the sanctioned members, but the scale of the penalties could reshape internal power dynamics and influence discussions at the upcoming congress—a critical juncture for the party’s future.
