PSG’s Warren Zaïre-Emery faces a tough decision after Champions League final snub

Despite delivering a standout season, 20-year-old Warren Zaïre-Emery found himself on the bench during Saturday’s dramatic 2-1 UEFA Champions League final victory over Arsenal. With Achraf Hakimi and Fabian Ruiz preferred in the starting XI, even head coach Luis Enrique publicly acknowledged the harsh reality facing the French international midfielder.

Luis Enrique made only one change from the team that lifted the trophy a year ago against Inter Milan, substituting Matvey Safonov for the final against the English side. Yet, Zaïre-Emery’s absence from the starting lineup raised eyebrows. The young star had been instrumental all season, yet found himself watching from the sidelines as Hakimi and Ruiz controlled the midfield in Paris.

Will Zaïre-Emery seek playing time elsewhere?

Speculation is already mounting over the future of one of France’s brightest prospects. A prominent football analyst suggested that players like Zaïre-Emery may reconsider their positions if regular starting opportunities aren’t guaranteed.

“A player like Warren Zaïre-Emery, who has had an excellent season, knows that if all eleven are fit, he might not start. He only played because others were unavailable. Young players in such situations often consider moving to secure regular minutes,” the analyst noted. “He could realistically walk into any top European team right now. He’s proven he belongs at that level.”

Luis Enrique admits unfair treatment amid PSG’s historic double

In the aftermath of the Champions League triumph, Luis Enrique addressed the media with candor rarely seen from a coach in his position. He acknowledged the club’s treatment of Zaïre-Emery had been unjust.

“I have to be positive—this is a dream come true. I’m thrilled, but first, I must say we’ve been unfair to Warren Zaïre-Emery as a coach. He’s shown incredible character, and it wasn’t fair to leave him out of the starting lineup. However, he came on and made a huge impact. The match was tough—the opponents defended deep, were technically and physically dominant, and it wasn’t easy to break them down. But in the second half, we were better. Facing a team like Arsenal is never simple. Still, winning back-to-back Champions League titles is historic. We’re proud, and it’s time to celebrate.”
