Senegal hosts upa’s 85th session as sonko champions african unity

The President of Senegal’s National Assembly, Ousmane Sonko, extended a warm welcome to delegates from across Africa as Dakar played host to the 85th session of the Pan-African Parliament’s Executive Committee on June 3-4, 2026.

In his opening address, Sonko conveyed his deep joy and pride in welcoming parliamentarians from diverse African nations to the capital city. Speaking on behalf of the Senegalese people and the National Assembly, he extended fraternal greetings and heartfelt wishes to all participants, emphasizing the continent’s shared heritage and collective aspirations.

The parliamentary leader underscored the urgent need for strengthened collaboration among African parliaments, particularly in a time defined by pressing political, economic, and security challenges. “In an era where our continent faces mounting obstacles, the deepening of parliamentary cooperation is no longer optional—it is essential,” he stated.

Reaffirming his commitment to the Pan-African vision, Sonko stressed that Africa’s future must be shaped by Africans themselves, guided by the continent’s values, ambitions, and sovereign interests. He expressed hope that the 85th session would serve as a catalyst for deeper integration and the advancement of shared continental goals.

Sonko concluded his remarks by wishing all delegates a productive stay in Dakar, delivering a resounding call for unity: “Long live African parliamentary cooperation. Long live a united and sovereign Africa.”
