Senegal opposition leader warns prime minister over political tensions

The leader of Senegal’s Pastef party, Ousmane Sonko, has publicly reprimanded the newly appointed Prime Minister Al Aminou Lo, warning him against escalating political tensions through controversial statements.

Ousmane Sonko addressing the press

Addressing reporters during a press briefing, Sonko did not mince his words, making it clear that the Prime Minister’s recent remarks had crossed a line. The former head of government urged Al Aminou Lo to focus strictly on administrative duties, emphasizing that his role demanded expertise over political grandstanding.

Sonko’s stern advice to the Prime Minister

Sonko began by advising the Prime Minister to restrict his public statements to technical and policy-related matters. « I strongly recommend he stick to the numbers. If he defines himself as a technocrat, he should limit himself to technocratic matters, » Sonko remarked.

Political tensions under the spotlight

He then turned to the political unrest that has marred relations between the Pastef party and the presidency, directly implicating the Prime Minister in its escalation. « We are well aware of the role he played in the disputes between Pastef and the President. Until now, we have chosen to keep certain details confidential. He should tread carefully, » Sonko cautioned.

Sonko also criticized the Prime Minister’s reaction to the newly formed government, questioning his authority to lecture others. « Just yesterday, during the government’s announcement, he was quick to offer unsolicited advice. Perhaps he should start by applying those lessons to himself, » Sonko stated.

Veiled threats and undisclosed information

In a firm and uncompromising tone, Sonko hinted at the existence of undisclosed information that could further complicate the Prime Minister’s position. « We know everything. While we have chosen to withhold certain facts, we will not tolerate deliberate provocation, » he concluded.
