Senegalese ambassador coly seck elected president of un fourth committee

The United Nations General Assembly’s Fourth Committee, responsible for special political and decolonization matters, has appointed Senegalese Ambassador Coly Seck as its president for the 81st session.

This historic appointment was confirmed during a session held in New York on June 2, 2026, following the conclusion of the 85th plenary meeting of the 80th General Assembly session. Member states also finalized the selection of presidents, vice presidents, and bureau members for all six major General Assembly committees for the upcoming term.

Diplomatic recognition and commitment to service

In a statement released by Senegal’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations, Ambassador Seck expressed deep gratitude for the trust placed in him by the international community. He emphasized his dedication to advancing the committee’s agenda with unwavering professionalism throughout the 81st session.

Key responsibilities of the Fourth Committee

The Fourth Committee oversees a broad spectrum of critical global issues, including:

  • Decolonization efforts
  • Consequences of ionizing radiation
  • Information-related matters
  • Peacekeeping operations and special political missions
  • Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA)
  • Israeli practices and settlement activities impacting Palestinian and Arab rights
  • International cooperation for peaceful space exploration

Ambassador Seck assumes this leadership role as the United Nations prepares for a pivotal 81st General Assembly session, set to commence in September 2026. The upcoming session unfolds against a backdrop of growing calls from member states to strengthen multilateralism, enhance organizational efficiency, and prioritize global peace and security.

Broader context of the 81st session

During the same assembly, the General Assembly elected Khalilur Rahman of Bangladesh as its 81st session president. Following his appointment, Rahman highlighted the organization’s mounting challenges, citing escalating conflicts, shrinking humanitarian space, human rights setbacks, developmental hurdles, and financial constraints.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres also addressed the assembly, framing the 81st session as a period of both challenges and opportunities. He remarked, « The relentless efforts in diplomacy, dialogue, and collaboration within this hall renew my optimism. The United Nations has the power to turn divisions into collective resolve for shared progress. »

Composition of the Fourth Committee’s bureau

As president of the Fourth Committee, Ambassador Seck will work alongside elected bureau members, including:

  • Vice-Presidents Fahad Mohammad Alajm (Kuwait)
  • Deborah Maria Borg (Malta)
  • Andrei Nicolenco (Republic of Moldova)
  • Rapporteur Matthew Moxey (Bahamas)

Senegal’s election to this role underscores its active engagement in multilateral diplomacy and peacekeeping initiatives within the United Nations framework. Official data from the UN Department of Peace Operations reveals that Senegal contributes over 3,000 military and police personnel to global peacekeeping missions—a testament to the country’s commitment to international stability.
