Government continuity takes precedence over partisan disputes

Minister Moussa Bala Fofana, who oversees Urban Development, Local Governance, and Territorial Planning, has issued a statement to clarify his position following remarks by Ousmane Sonko, who questioned the loyalty of certain government officials retained in the administration.

The minister’s intervention comes at a time when internal party dynamics within PASTEF are under scrutiny, with debates intensifying over the alignment of government members with the party’s official political direction.

In his public statement, Moussa Bala Fofana emphasized the importance of state continuity while expressing his deep appreciation for the confidence placed in him by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. Now serving in his third consecutive government role, he underscored that his appointment represents an institutional honor rather than a personal favor.

While he acknowledged never having crossed paths with President Faye before the political transition, he described the working environment as one focused on the effective execution of public policies. Addressing direct criticism from Ousmane Sonko’s June 2026 statement, Moussa Bala Fofana firmly distanced himself from any implication of disloyalty or defiance. He declared unequivocally, “Yes, I have acted freely and independently.”

The minister clarified that his decision to remain in government was not driven by career ambitions or political defiance but by a personal interpretation of his public responsibilities. He stressed that no political pressure influenced his choice, instead framing it as a deliberate commitment to national service.

He further elaborated on his stance, framing it as a balancing act between party discipline and national duty. “Between partisan loyalty and my duty to the nation, I chose to continue the mission entrusted to me,” he stated, emphasizing that the general interest must prevail over short-term political considerations.
