On a recent working visit to Lomé, the Acting Head of the United States Embassy, Kimberly M. McClure, engaged in high-level discussions with Togo’s Minister of Territorial Administration, Local Governance and Customary Affairs. The meeting focused on deepening collaboration in key areas such as local governance, decentralization and social cohesion.
The June 2026 meeting was part of a courtesy call, yet evolved into a substantive exchange on shared priorities between both nations. Central to the dialogue were Togo’s ongoing decentralization reforms, the strengthening of local governance structures and strategies to enhance community cohesion through active involvement of traditional leaders, local authorities and community actors.

Advancing local governance and inclusive development
The Minister outlined Togo’s administrative organization and highlighted recent government reforms aimed at boosting public service efficiency at the local level. These reforms are designed to bring state services closer to citizens while fostering greater transparency and accountability in governance.
In response, Ms. McClure reaffirmed the United States’ strong interest in Togo’s local governance dynamics. She emphasized Washington’s commitment to better grasp the challenges of decentralization to more effectively support initiatives in this field.
Addressing regional security and stability
Beyond institutional matters, the discussions also tackled pressing security challenges facing the subregion. Both delegations stressed the urgency of sustained joint efforts to promote peace, security and sustainable development across West Africa.
This meeting underscores the robust cooperation between Togo and the United States, reflecting a shared vision of empowering local governance and driving inclusive growth for the benefit of all citizens.
