The Prime Minister of Algeria, Sifi Ghrieb, touched down in Niamey this Wednesday for a high-level official visit aimed at deepening bilateral cooperation between the two nations. The mission, personally overseen by Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, underscores a shared commitment to expanding collaboration across key strategic sectors.
The Algerian delegation includes the Minister of Energy and Renewable Energies, alongside the Director-General of the Algerian Agency for International Cooperation in Solidarity and Development.
Initial discussions between the Algerian and Nigerien Prime Ministers centered on evaluating the current state of relations and identifying avenues to broaden mutual cooperation. The talks are designed to catalyze new momentum in joint development projects and partnership initiatives between Algiers and Niamey.
Energy cooperation takes center stage with new power plant launch
A highlight of the visit is the inauguration of a 40-megawatt power plant in the Gorou Banda district of Niamey. Developed within the framework of Algerian-Nigerien collaboration, this facility represents a direct contribution from Algeria to Niger’s energy infrastructure, reinforcing cross-border efforts to bolster electrical production and distribution.
The new plant is expected to enhance Niger’s electricity generation capacity and improve energy access across multiple zones in the capital. It also reflects Algeria’s ongoing dedication to fostering regional stability and development in the Sahel-Saharan belt.
Bilateral talks extend to future cooperation and regional issues
The itinerary includes a scheduled meeting between the Algerian Prime Minister and Niger’s Head of State. This session will explore future cooperation pathways, alongside broader regional and international topics of mutual interest.
The visit unfolds against a backdrop of accelerating political and economic exchanges between Algiers and Niamey. Both countries continue to prioritize strengthening their partnership to better serve the needs and aspirations of their respective populations.
