Morocco to lead un general assembly session 81

During a plenary session at the United Nations headquarters in New York, Morocco was selected by lot to hold the first seat in the General Assembly’s 81st session, convening in September. The historic decision was announced by UN Secretary-General António Guterres, marking a significant moment for Morocco on the global stage.

The announcement was made by Stéphane Dujarric, the UN Spokesperson, who confirmed the selection by drawing lots, a longstanding tradition within the Assembly. “The Secretary-General has just announced the country that will occupy the first seat during the next session—it is Morocco,” he stated, highlighting the significance of the moment.

In addition to Morocco’s selection, the Assembly also elected Khalilur Rahman, Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister, as President of the 81st session. The session also saw the appointment of vice presidents, including representatives from the United States, China, France, the United Kingdom, Russia, Egypt, Afghanistan, and Gabon.

Why the first seat matters

The seating arrangement in the General Assembly follows a strict rotation system, with the first seat traditionally assigned to a country from the African group. Morocco’s selection underscores its diplomatic influence and active role within the United Nations.

The General Assembly, the UN’s principal deliberative body, brings together all 193 member states. It plays a pivotal role in shaping global policies, approving the organization’s budget, and electing non-permanent members to the Security Council. The Assembly’s decisions carry significant weight in international affairs.

Next steps for Morocco

As Morocco prepares to assume this prestigious role, the country’s diplomatic corps is expected to play a key part in steering discussions during the session. The leadership position provides an opportunity to champion issues of global concern, from sustainable development to peacekeeping efforts.

This milestone reflects Morocco’s growing prominence in international diplomacy, reinforcing its commitment to multilateral cooperation and global governance.
