Benin president romuald wadagni sworn in after historic election

In a solemn ceremony bathed in the golden glow of the Palais des congrès, Benin’s new leadership took center stage as Romuald Wadagni was officially sworn in as President, succeeding Patrice Talon. The event began with the Constitutional Court delivering its verdict on the presidential election results, setting the stage for the nation’s transition.

With the court’s proclamation echoing through the grand hall, Wadagni stepped forward, dressed in a deep blue suit and tie, his right hand raised high. In a moment of solemnity, he recited the presidential oath: « I pledge to uphold and defend the Constitution, and to face the consequences of perjury if I fail. » The historic words were met with thunderous applause and a ceremonial salute of twelve cannon blasts.

Following the oath, Wadagni was formally invested as Grand Master of the National Orders, a symbol of his new role. The Chief of Staff then ascended the podium to present him with the national flag, marking the official transfer of power. In his inaugural address, the President pledged to govern Benin with unwavering integrity, courage, and dedication, vowing to strengthen the rule of law and protect fundamental freedoms for all citizens.

With a vision of inclusive prosperity, he promised that economic growth would reach every household in the country. On matters of national security, Wadagni reaffirmed Benin’s commitment to combating terrorism, declaring that the nation would remain steadfast against any threats to its stability.

Strengthening regional ties and diplomacy

The inauguration drew a distinguished audience, including former Beninese Presidents Nicéphore Soglo and Thomas Boni Yayi, alongside 16 foreign delegations. Among them was a high-ranking French official, reflecting France’s enduring partnership with Benin. Neighbors from the West African region were also present, including delegations from Togo, Nigeria, Burkina Faso, and Niger—a country with which relations have been strained in recent years.

Addressing the assembled leaders, Wadagni emphasized the importance of regional cooperation, stating, « We are bound together by shared challenges and opportunities. » His message underscored Benin’s determination to foster deeper collaboration with its neighbors, recognizing that collective efforts are essential for peace, security, and development in West Africa.
