In a strong statement from Kinshasa, correspondent Pascal Mulegwa reports on the growing tensions between the Democratic Republic of Congo’s political leadership and the opposition.

The C64 coalition has firmly rejected President Félix Tshisekedi’s proposal for a national dialogue, dismissing it as a political maneuver rather than a genuine effort to address the country’s pressing challenges. Opposition leaders argue that while citizens face real hardships, the government’s focus remains misplaced.

Following five hours of deliberation, coalition spokesperson Martin Fayulu delivered a scathing critique: « The Congolese people are not fooled. These endless consultations by Félix Tshisekedi fail to address the war’s urgency, the insecurity gripping the nation, the health crisis, or the deepening social despair. They distract from what truly matters.»

Opposition figures accuse President Tshisekedi of prioritizing power retention beyond his constitutionally mandated second term, which concludes in 2028. « The government cynically exploits the war and eastern DRC’s suffering as a political tool to justify overstaying its mandate,» they declared. « The C64 will not stand idly by as Felix Tshisekedi risks further destabilizing the nation by extending his rule.»

In response to what they call a dangerous trajectory, the coalition is rallying public support. They have called for a major national march on September 15 to challenge the government’s perceived manipulation of the political process.
