Benin’s foreign minister highlights opportunities for south korean investors

SEOUL — In a landmark address during the Foreign Affairs Ministers’ Meeting between Africa and South Korea, Benin’s Foreign Minister Corinne Amori Brunet outlined how her nation is emerging as a stable gateway to West Africa’s thriving markets. Speaking at the Lotte Hotel on June 1, 2026, she emphasized that while Benin may be small in size, its strategic advantages make it far more than just a minor player in the region.

a gateway to west africa’s economic potential

Minister Brunet stressed that Benin’s political stability, investor-friendly policies, and prime geographic location position it as an ideal hub for businesses seeking to access West Africa. As a founding member of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU), Benin serves as a critical maritime gateway and logistics corridor for the broader region.

«Benin’s role is not about mineral wealth,» she explained. «While geological surveys may one day reveal critical resources, our focus today is on trade facilitation and attracting investors who want to tap into West Africa’s dynamic market. We are building the infrastructure and policies to make that happen.»

Benin’s transformation under the wadagni administration

Under the leadership of President Romuald Wadagni, Benin has undergone a decade of transformative reforms aimed at modernizing infrastructure and creating an enabling environment for foreign investment. Key initiatives include:

  • The Port of Cotonou — now equipped with smart logistics and digitalized customs procedures, making it one of the most efficient trade gateways in the region.
  • The Glo-Djigbé Industrial Zone — a flagship industrial hub that has attracted multinational corporations and bolstered local manufacturing.
  • Digital governance — an overhaul of administrative systems to streamline business operations and reduce red tape.

strengthening ties with south korea through investment and culture

Minister Brunet expressed optimism about deepening cooperation between Benin and South Korea, highlighting shared values of discipline, reform, and rapid development. «South Korea’s journey from post-war recovery to global leadership in just one generation mirrors what Benin is striving to achieve,» she noted.

Beyond economic ties, she underscored the importance of cultural exchange, mentioning plans to showcase Benin’s rich heritage in South Korea. This includes the 2021 repatriation of 26 looted artifacts from France and the potential for a traveling exhibition in Seoul.

The June 1 meeting marked a pivotal moment in post-2024 summit relations, she added, transitioning from high-level promises to concrete collaboration.

As her first official international trip since assuming office last month, Minister Brunet’s visit reflects Benin’s commitment to fostering stronger partnerships with partners like South Korea to drive sustainable growth across West Africa.
