Cameroon boosts cocoa export quality with specialized verifier training

Cameroon completes specialized training for cocoa export verifiers

The National Cocoa and Coffee Board (ONCC), in partnership with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), successfully concluded a training program for 35 export warehouse verifiers in Douala on June 26, 2026.

Over a three-day period, from June 24 to 26, participants honed their expertise in crucial areas such as sampling methodologies, rigorous quality control, and efficient management of cocoa storage facilities designated for international shipment. Didime Olivier Tchoumi, UNIDO’s lead technical advisor, emphasized that this strategic initiative is designed to elevate the global competitiveness of both Cameroonian cocoa and coffee. This vital program forms a component of the PICS-Cameroon project, which receives funding from Japan.

In a significant international triumph, Cameroonian cocoa secured a coveted gold medal on Tuesday, February 20, 2026, at the 10th edition of the Cacao of Excellence Awards. This prestigious event, held alongside the renowned Chocoa Trade Fair, serves as a pivotal annual gathering for the global cocoa and chocolate industry. The competition saw approximately 191 samples from 45 different origins meticulously judged on their quality, sustainability, and unique sensory profiles.

Out of all the entries, only 50 distinct lots received recognition from an esteemed international panel of sensory and industry specialists. Notably, sample number 167, proudly representing Cameroon, ascended to the top of the podium, clinching victory in the highly competitive Africa & Indian Ocean category.

For Cameroon, this latest achievement resonates strongly with a bronze recognition earned in 2023, underscoring a clear upward trajectory and enhanced qualitative competitiveness for its cocoa beans within the discerning “fine and flavour” premium market segments. In these specialized markets, factors like taste, authenticity, and sustainability are paramount, often commanding significantly higher prices compared to traditional commodity cocoa.

Beyond the prestige of a single medal, this significant distinction firmly establishes Cameroon’s reputation as a prime terroir for cultivating exceptional cocoas. This aligns perfectly with the increasing demand from high-end chocolatiers and specialized international markets. Furthermore, this recognition is poised to stimulate greater investment in crucial areas such as traceability systems, advanced technical training, and the robust structuring of cooperatives. These elements are indispensable for sustainably converting this qualitative excellence into concrete economic benefits for local Cameroonian producers, a positive development for the African economy news.
