Cameroon Takes Steps to Combat Gold Mining Fraud

The Cameroonian government has announced enhanced controls in the gold mining sector to boost state revenue.

The top priority will be implemented in August, aiming to allow the state to collect around $680 million in fiscal and customs revenues from approximately 17 tonnes of gold production between 2025 and 2026.

The initiative stems from a realization that officially declared gold output volumes often exceed actual production levels. Authorities thus seek to rectify these discrepancies, which do not benefit the public coffers.

Government Action Plan

  • The government aims to rely on on-site controls as it currently has at least 200 companies operating under authorization.

This move seeks to curb illicit activities in the sector and ensure that state revenues are collected fairly.
