On Monday, 8 June 2026, a hearing lasting over four hours took place at the N’Djamena High Court. A man is being prosecuted for allegedly selling a single plot of land to multiple people for several million CFA francs. The defendant also faces charges of making death threats.

According to the case file, the accused is said to have received sums ranging from 52 million to 99.5 million CFA francs from different individuals.

During the session, heated exchanges occurred between the defendant’s legal team and the lawyers representing the civil parties. The latter are demanding full repayment of the amounts their clients paid, plus compensation for damages.

The defence team argued that their client was held in pre-trial detention for more than three months by intelligence services before being brought before a judge—a practice they claim is illegal. They maintain that the land rightfully belongs to their client, who represents his brothers, and that there is no dispute over the property. They further alleged that the defendant’s paternal uncle manipulated certain family members to lay claim to his deceased brother’s estate, which prompted the buyers to demand their money back.

The civil party’s lawyers described the defendant’s actions as fraud, but the defence rejected this accusation, stating that no property was obtained deceitfully and that articles 213 and 214 of the Chadian penal code do not apply in this instance. The prosecutor called for a conviction on all charges, emphasising that collecting substantial sums from multiple people constitutes an offence, and requested a fine of 500,000 CFA francs.

Both sides are putting pressure on the judges to rule in their favour. Notably, a similar session took place in the same court on 1 June for this case. The tribunal has adjourned for deliberation. In the meantime, the accused remains in custody at Klessoum prison.
