Chad’s delegation unlocks sustainable urban solutions in Bakou
The Minister of Land Use Planning, Urban Development and Housing presented the outcomes of Chad’s delegation mission to the 13th World Urban Forum (WUF13) in Bakou, Azerbaijan. This key meeting took place at the minister’s office, bringing together government officials, local leaders, and international partners who contributed to the initiative.
The Chadian delegation, led by the minister, included the First Deputy Mayor of N’Djamena, executives from the SOPROFIM agency, and representatives from UN-Habitat. Discussions during the forum centered on pressing challenges such as housing shortages, sustainable urban growth, and building city resilience against climate change impacts.
The minister highlighted that Chad’s participation enhanced the country’s profile in global urban policy debates, particularly in shaping African urban development strategies. A dedicated pavilion showcased Chadian urban planning and housing initiatives, positioning the nation as a proactive voice in sustainable city development.
New funding and international partnerships emerge
One major breakthrough was the announcement that Chad has been included among the top ten eligible countries for the United Nations Green Climate Fund, supported by an initiative from Kenya. This designation could unlock significant financing for urban resilience projects, especially flood mitigation efforts in vulnerable areas.
During the forum, Chad engaged in strategic discussions with Kenya and Morocco to explore new collaborations in social housing, informal settlement upgrading, and urban planning best practices. Future joint missions and knowledge-sharing programs are in the pipeline to strengthen these partnerships.
Roadmap for inclusive urban growth
The minister stressed that Chad’s presence at WUF13 has paved the way for tangible project development that aligns with the government’s vision of inclusive, sustainable, and climate-resilient urban development. This mission reflects the country’s commitment to improving living conditions in its cities, guided by the leadership’s strategic priorities.
The outcomes of this engagement are expected to drive structural urban projects that directly benefit communities across Chad.
