Côte d’Ivoire champions human-centric migration governance at un forum

Côte d’Ivoire is making its mark on the global stage by actively participating in the second session of the International Migration Review Forum (IMRF) at the United Nations headquarters in New York. Through this strategic engagement, the country reaffirms its commitment to a migration governance model rooted in cooperation, human dignity, and sustainable development.

This international gathering, focused on monitoring the implementation of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration—adopted in 2018 in Marrakech—brings together nations to address the pressing challenges of human mobility worldwide.

Dr. Hinin Moustapha, Director-General of the National Population Office (ONP), represented Côte d’Ivoire at the high-level sessions, speaking on behalf of Dr. Souleymane Diarrassouba, Minister of Planning and Development. His intervention highlighted the Ivory Coast’s advancements in key migration management sectors, including bolstering migration data systems, reducing vulnerabilities, combating discrimination, and fostering international cooperation.

Data-driven migration policies take center stage

Dr. Moustapha emphasized the transformative efforts Côte d’Ivoire has made in enhancing its migration data infrastructure. The country is overhauling its data collection and analysis systems to produce reliable, real-time, and disaggregated insights that can guide evidence-based policymaking.

The culmination of this initiative was the 2025 national migration survey, a landmark study that positions Côte d’Ivoire as a trailblazer in African migration statistics and data-driven governance.

Protecting migrants through inclusive policies

Beyond statistics, Côte d’Ivoire is prioritizing the protection of migrants through integrated support mechanisms and inclusive social policies. These efforts aim to provide better assistance to migrants while mitigating the risks they face, particularly in vulnerable situations.

Combating discrimination and fostering inclusivity

The fight against discrimination remains a cornerstone of Ivory Coast’s migration strategy. Authorities have intensified awareness campaigns and strengthened institutional frameworks to build a more inclusive society that upholds human rights.

Global solidarity: the key to addressing migration challenges

During the forum, the Ivorian delegation championed the need for international cooperation grounded in solidarity and shared responsibility. For Côte d’Ivoire, tackling migration challenges requires a collaborative approach among countries of origin, transit, and destination.

A fresh perspective on migration as a development catalyst

Through its participation in the IMRF, Côte d’Ivoire is championing a forward-thinking vision of migration. No longer viewed solely as a security or social issue, the country now sees human mobility as a strategic opportunity for economic, cultural, and human development.

Rooted in its tradition of hospitality and openness, Côte d’Ivoire is determined to turn migration into a vehicle for shared prosperity. This vision is built on three pillars: human dignity, solidarity among peoples, and the intelligent use of data to inform policies.
