Fraudulent practices in student visa applications are prompting stricter verification measures at the French embassy in Yaoundé. According to officials, irregularities have become increasingly prevalent in dossiers submitted by Cameroonians seeking admission to private schools in France.

« The scale of fraud is alarming, » states Muriel Piquet-Viaux, Deputy Director of Cooperation and Cultural Action at the French embassy. She highlights a range of deceptive tactics, including forged documents, false financial statements, and mismatched identity papers. « Applicants may present fake proof of funds or incorrect residency permits—all designed to mislead the system, » she adds.

Enhanced scrutiny amid rising irregularities

In response, French consular authorities have significantly tightened their verification protocols. « We now dedicate a specialized team to meticulously examine every document, » Piquet-Viaux explains. « The goal is to eliminate even the slightest opportunity for fraud. »

These measures directly impact new visa applications. Cameroonian students applying to private French institutions must now provide proof of full tuition payment or equivalent funds in a blocked account before their visa is approved. This requirement applies even if partial payments were already made in France, though outcomes may vary depending on where the initial deposits were made.

France’s stricter policies have drawn criticism from families affected by the changes. The country is currently the only African nation subjected to these enhanced restrictions for student mobility.
