Gabon secures vice presidency at un General Assembly

On Tuesday, June 2, 2026, Gabon achieved a historic milestone by securing a vice-presidential position in the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). The election places Libreville among 21 newly appointed vice presidents, marking the country’s reintegration into the UN’s principal deliberative body—a first in nearly a decade.

Gabon will not embark on this journey alone. Joining five other African nations—Cabo Verde, Egypt, Guinea-Bissau, Eritrea, and Zimbabwe—the country will officially assume its duties in September 2026, at the opening of the 81st session of the UNGA.

Representing the African regional group, Gabon’s Permanent Mission to the UN is set to play a pivotal role. Working closely with the session’s elected president, Khalilur Rahman, Gabon’s diplomats will help shape and streamline the international legislative agenda.

Driving the UN’s decision-making process

Gabon’s one-year mandate comes with significant managerial and political responsibilities. The Gabonese representative will preside over multiple plenary sessions, both routine and high-level, ensuring smooth proceedings.

The true influence, however, lies within the UN’s powerful General Committee. Gabon’s inclusion in this body grants it a direct role in steering the institution: allocating agenda items, coordinating critical votes on global resolutions, and managing institutional priorities. A strategic seat to amplify Africa’s voice on the world stage.

Championing Africa’s priorities in global forums

Beyond procedural duties, this opportunity allows Gabon to align with fellow African nations. Through close collaboration, Gabonese diplomacy aims to champion the continent’s most pressing concerns. Key areas of focus include sustainable development, climate action, and reforms to the UN’s administrative framework.

This diplomatic triumph underscores the vision of international engagement championed by Gabon’s Head of State, President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema.
