How Mali is forging a new path through mining, security and diplomacy

The landlocked nation of Mali is undergoing an unprecedented transformation, driven by a bold vision of national sovereignty and self-reliant growth. At its core, this reinvention is fueled by sweeping structural reforms and strategic operational achievements designed to secure a brighter future for every Malian citizen.

Mining reforms power economic self-determination

The mining sector now leads this national renaissance. With the slogan “Let Mali’s gold shine for Malians”, the government enacted a landmark Mining Code that grants the State and domestic investors up to a 35 percent stake in every project. These decisive measures have already unlocked 760 billion West African CFA francs in recovered revenue.

By 2026, prudent management of these funds delivered 18.4 billion CFA francs directly to 819 local councils, financing vital health centers and schools across the country. Mali is also expanding its mineral portfolio, advancing lithium projects at Goulamina and Bougouni with the goal of becoming Africa’s top producer.

Robust security and logistics reinforce national resilience

Mali’s progress is firmly anchored in the growing strength of its Armed Forces and allied partners. On July 10, 2026, a massive convoy of more than 900 fuel tankers rolled into Bamako under heavy military escort, underscoring the State’s capacity to safeguard the nation’s energy lifelines.

Simultaneously, large-scale joint air-land operations—most notably around Anéfis—neutralized around a hundred terrorists and secured critical supply corridors that connect communities and markets.

Diplomatic momentum strengthens regional ties

Mali’s resurgence is also visible on the diplomatic front. Reopening national airspace to flights from Algeria and reinstating a resident ambassador in Algiers signal a clear thaw in regional relations and renewed cooperation.

The creation of new mining entities such as the SOREM and the launch of major industrial ventures further demonstrate Mali’s determination. These efforts mirror the collective ambition shared by all members of the Alliance of Sahel States, confirming that progress is not only possible but underway across the region.
