Côte d’Ivoire’s political landscape shifts with new PPA-CI leadership model

Laurent Gbagbo, former President of Côte d’Ivoire and current leader of the Parti des Peuples Africains-Côte d’Ivoire (PPA-CI), has announced a significant restructuring of his party’s leadership. In a formal statement released this week, he revealed the appointment of five key figures to share executive responsibilities, marking a transition toward a more collaborative governance model.

The new leadership structure includes four vice-presidents, each assigned distinct strategic roles, alongside a newly created position of President of the Strategic and Political Council (CSP). This collective approach aims to enhance operational efficiency while maintaining ideological coherence across the party’s structures.

Key appointments and their responsibilities

• Assoa Adou, First Vice-President in charge of party doctrine: Responsible for ensuring compliance with the party’s statutes, internal regulations, and aligning all activities with established principles. His role includes overseeing the proper functioning of party organs.
• Oulaye Hubert, Second Vice-President overseeing party life: Delegated to preside over Central Committee sessions, subject to the party’s constitutional framework and the President’s directives.
• Ackan Emmanuel, Third Vice-President for party mobilization: Tasked with energizing the party’s political activities and expanding its outreach. He will also manage relations with national institutions while adhering to the party’s policy framework.
• Justin Koné Katinan, Fourth Vice-President for general policy: Charged with defining, coordinating, and monitoring the party’s political agenda. He will lead the development of the party’s government program.
• Sébastien Dano Djedje, President of the CSP: Appointed as the operational head of the party, responsible for overall management and strategic supervision.

The reshuffle reflects Gbagbo’s vision of a collegial leadership model, emphasizing collective responsibility over individual authority. «The strength of our party lies not in a single individual but in the unity and collaboration of its leaders and members working toward a shared vision,» he stated in the announcement.

This leadership reorganization was officially unveiled during the recent PPA-CI Renaissance Day celebrations held in Songon M’Bratté on May 16. The event underscored the party’s commitment to modernizing its structures to strengthen its influence and operational capacity.

The move comes at a critical juncture as the PPA-CI seeks to consolidate its position within Côte d’Ivoire’s evolving political landscape while preparing for future electoral challenges.
