Le Mans promoted to Ligue 1, Bastia relegated to Ligue 3 after disciplinary ruling
The Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) disciplinary committee confirmed the 0-2 victory of Le Mans over Bastia on Saturday, which secured their promotion to Ligue 1. Due to crowd disturbances in the Corsican stadium, Bastia faces two enforced home matches behind closed doors and one with probation, though they avoid a point deduction.
The disciplinary body met Wednesday evening and validated the match result from the 34th Ligue 2 round, where referee Ruddy Buquet halted play in the final seconds to protect players from flares and smoke bombs thrown from the stands. The game never resumed, but the LFP’s ruling sent Le Mans up and Bastia down to Ligue 3—the professional tier replacing the National next season.
Bastia avoids point deduction despite past incidents
Bastia escapes a point deduction for next season, a penalty they narrowly avoided. The club was already on probation following prior crowd incidents less than six months ago. On December 5, the match against Red Star was abandoned after a flare landed on the pitch near a player, yet the club avoided further sanctions this time. Sébastien Deneux, LFP disciplinary committee president, explained: “Points are typically deducted when a match participant is struck, which did not occur here. Therefore, we saw no justification to revoke Bastia’s probationary status.”
