The final matchday of the Ligue 2 season reached a turbulent conclusion at the Armand-Cesari stadium. The referee was forced to permanently halt the game after spectators launched flares onto the pitch, a reaction triggered by a second goal from the visiting side during the opening moments of stoppage time.
A monumental return to the elite
Following the incident, Le Mans FC expressed immense joy over what they described as a historic promotion. This achievement is filled with emotion and pride for the club, marking their return to the top tier of French football after a 16-year hiatus.
“Reaching Ligue 1 is a triumph for every member of this club; it is a collective success,” stated President Thierry Gomez. He acknowledged the significant hurdles that lie ahead in the top flight but emphasized that the club would remain consistent in its approach.
Sanctions and relegation for Bastia
In the wake of the crowd trouble, the LFP has imposed heavy sanctions on Bastia. The Corsican side, which has been relegated to the third division, must serve a penalty of two home matches behind closed doors, with a third match suspended. An investigation was fast-tracked by league authorities due to the gravity of the situation.
The outcome of the match confirmed Le Mans‘ ascent to the elite, while a simultaneous victory for Laval—who occupied the playoff spot—guaranteed that Bastia would finish in the penultimate position, resulting in their drop to the National level.
Unstoppable celebrations
Although the official validation of the score was delayed until Wednesday due to the disturbances, the Le Mans players began their festivities immediately. The celebrations started in the dressing rooms on Saturday night before moving to the club’s training center, where the squad joined supporters late into the night.
This promotion is part of a remarkable trajectory for Le Mans. The club has managed to secure two consecutive promotions, having competed in the National division as recently as the 2024-2025 season. They now prepare to rediscover the atmosphere of Ligue 1 after more than a decade and a half away.
This is not the first time Bastia has faced repercussions for fan behavior this season. In December, the club was handed a loss by forfeit in a match against Red Star after a flare thrown from the stands struck an opposing player.
