A black saturday for Mali

April 25, 2026, will forever be etched in Mali’s history as a day of unparalleled violence, marking the most severe security crisis the nation has endured since 2012. This ‘black Saturday’ witnessed a series of highly coordinated assaults across the country, with multiple cities reportedly falling under siege and prominent figures within the Malian government specifically targeted. The tragic events culminated in the untimely death of the defense minister, sending shockwaves through the nation’s leadership and the broader landscape of African politics. These extensive attacks also brought into sharp focus a stark and concerning development: an openly acknowledged alliance between a significant jihadist group, such as the Groupe de soutien à l’islam et aux musulmans (Jnim), and independentist rebels. This new collaboration significantly escalates the complexity of Mali’s security challenges. The strategic city of Kidal, for instance, which was previously under the control of Africa Corps mercenaries, was reportedly seized by the FLA on this very same day, underscoring the widespread and coordinated nature of the offensive.
