Mali hosts pan-african media dialogue forum in Bamako

Mali’s prime minister, Abdoulaye Maïga, attended the opening ceremony of a series of panels focusing on key themes such as media literacy as a civic challenge in the digital age, information disorder and the MDM verification toolkit, and teaching media education.

Morocco, the guest of honour, was strongly represented at the forum, which took place from 3 to 6 June 2026.

According to Aziz Boucetta, publishing director of Panorapost.com, the pan-African family gathers in Mali to discuss Africa’s problems, which are perfectly surmountable once we become aware of them. He noted that Morocco accepted Mali’s invitation and will bring its perspective while hoping to forge partnerships for the continent’s development.

Aboubacar Abdoulwahidou Maïga, director general of the journalism school and panelist, highlighted that the rate of internet-connected Malians rose from 2% in 2012 to 35% today, with 80% of users being young people under 35. Within this segment, 60% get their news through social networks.

Abdoulwahidou Maïga emphasised the insufficient digitalisation of Malian media, without which the media industry cannot become profitable.

For the head of government, brigade general Abdoulaye Maïga, the subregion faces complex security challenges that are often accompanied by an intense battle for perception. Modern conflicts are no longer fought solely on the military ground but also on the digital and informational media field. In this context, the journalist becomes a strategic actor for state stability, social cohesion, and societal resilience.

He concluded by insisting on strengthening national and African capacities. It is important, he said, to enhance the professional capability of the media so that they can fully fulfil their mission.
