President Goïta kicks off Mali’s largest hospital upgrade program
Bamako, November 2025 — General Assimi Goïta, Head of State of the Transition, has inaugurated the Presidential Emergency Hospital Project by laying the foundation stone at the Korofina Reference Health Centre (Commune I, Bamako District). This landmark initiative signals the start of a sweeping nationwide healthcare transformation aimed at modernising Mali’s medical infrastructure.
The Minister of Health and Social Development, Colonel-Major Assa Badiallo Touré, explained that this effort builds on the December 2024 National Health Summit, which highlighted the urgent need to expand access to care and enhance the quality of medical services across the country.
Comprehensive overhaul of Mali’s public hospitals
According to the Minister, the project will dramatically restructure and modernise the national hospital network. It includes the construction of 15 new hospitals and the conversion of Bamako’s existing Reference Health Centres into full-fledged district hospitals. Financed entirely from the national budget, the works are scheduled for completion within 12 months in Bamako and 24 months in the regions.
The Presidential Emergency Hospital Project consists of three key components:
- Upgrading the seven Reference Health Centres in Bamako’s arrondissements to district hospital status.
- Building brand-new district hospitals in Bla and Kangaba.
- Constructing modern regional hospitals in San, Koutiala, Bougouni, Dioïla, Nioro, Bandiagara and Koulikoro.
These new facilities will be equipped with cutting-edge medical technology, boast enhanced inpatient capacities and offer specialised services, including haemodialysis units at the first and sixth district hospitals in Bamako.
Commitment to quality care and timely delivery
Speaking after the ceremony, President Goïta stressed that healthcare is a cornerstone of national development. He called on the Minister of Health to ensure uninterrupted public services during construction and to strictly adhere to project timelines. He also underscored the project’s human impact: bringing high-quality care closer to communities, reducing medical evacuations and alleviating pressure on existing facilities.
