Morocco has once again voiced its unwavering commitment to a political resolution for Libya’s crisis, this time during a session of the African Union’s Peace and Security Council (AU PSC) held on Tuesday.
Addressing the AU PSC meeting on Libya, Ambassador Mohamed Arrouchi, Morocco’s permanent representative to the African Union and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, reiterated the Kingdom’s steadfast support for national reconciliation efforts and inter-Libyan dialogue initiatives. He stressed the need to build on progress already made and foster consensus among all Libyan stakeholders.
Arrouchi emphasized that the Skhirat Agreement, signed on December 17, 2015, as a result of UN-backed reconciliation between Libyan parties, remains one of the most credible frameworks for a lasting political solution. He called for preserving Libya’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity as essential conditions for sustainable stability.
The diplomat also conveyed Morocco’s appreciation—under the leadership of King Mohammed VI—for the African Union’s consistent and dedicated efforts to promote peace, security, and stability across the continent, particularly those aimed at achieving a political settlement in Libya.
Arrouchi highlighted recent meetings held in Tripoli and Zenten that culminated in an agreement signed on January 7, 2026, in the Libyan capital between representatives of the Government of National Unity and the eastern-based government.
He further underscored Morocco’s ongoing role in shepherding Libya’s political process, noting that the Kingdom’s efforts focus on bridging gaps between Libyan factions—an approach that has earned the trust of all parties involved. These initiatives adhere to international legality, the Skhirat Agreement framework, and the Bouznika understandings, all aimed at fostering a Libyan-led solution acceptable to everyone. Arrouchi stressed the importance of continuing political efforts and avoiding military options to resolve the crisis.
